Interior Minister of Azerbaijan Ramil Usubov met with visiting Swedish Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy Ms. Barbro Holmberg. Colonel-General Usubov informed Minister Holmberg on legal reforms being implemented in Azerbaijan, crime situation in the country and measures to bring the activity of police to conformity with democratic values. Pointed out the importance of migration processes regulation for every country to ensure its security, he advised that in July 2004, a Department for fighting human trafficking was established, and in August 2005 the Ministry set up a Migration service. “On the other hand, the Azerbaijani Government is now considering the draft readmission agreements with Germany, Austria, Benelux, Switzerland, Russia and Turkey. If the intergovernmental agreement is reached, the same could be done with Sweden, as well” the Interior Minister said. Mr. Barbro Holmberg thanked the Minister for the information, and stressed the necessity of training personnel engaged in migration problems. He described her visit as an important step towards future cooperation between Azerbaijan and Sweden in this sphere.
