PRESS RELEASE BY THE PRESS SERVICE OF THE MINISTRY OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS
13.12.2013December 13 - Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Colonel General Ramil Usubov received Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Hellenic Republic to Azerbaijan Dimitrios Tsoungas.
Having welcomed the guest, the Minister congratulated the Ambassador on his appointment and wished him success in diplomatic activity.
Usubov expressed hope for further extension of the cooperation in line with the national interests of both countries and peoples and on the basis of political will of the heads of two states, mutual visits and documents signed between the countries at the summit level.
Further the Minister gave a brief view of the functions and activities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, criminal situation and innovations and reforms implemented in the country. Having mentioned that one of the main tasks set by the President is to protect the rights and freedoms of citizens, the Minister noted that special attention is paid to the proper selection and recruitment of personnel, improvement of the officers' professionalism and use of best practices in their service activities.
Mr. Usubov noted that the ministries of two states cooperate only within Interpol, and recalled that the draft agreement on Cooperation between the Governments of Azerbaijan and Greece in the Fight against Crime was prepared and submitted to Greece in 2008. The Minister placed an emphasis on interest of his agency in the development of cooperation between the two countries and noted that this document would create favourable legal basis for this work.
Touching upon existing challenges, the Minister emphasized that effective prevention of the main kinds of transnational organized crime like international terrorism, illegal drug trafficking, trafficking in human beings and illegal migration may be provided only by means of joint efforts.
Having expressed his gratitude for hearty welcome and detailed information, Ambassador Dimitrios Tsoungas stated that Greece is interested in deepening cooperation with Azerbaijan in all spheres and he would make every effort for further development of the bilateral cooperation between our countries.
